On August 28th of 2015 Doris Rice Burkhead died at her home in Sanford, North Carolina. Born on September 10th of 1923, she was the daughter of John Henry and Willie Mae Rice. She was the beloved wife of Cooper Moffitt Burkhead, who died in 2011, and is survived by two daughters, Harriet Phillips of Winston Salem, NC and Bettie Carey Bragg and husband Joseph Bragg of Jasper, GA; a brother, John Henry Rice, Jr. and wife Katie of Sanford, NC; two sisters, Henrietta Fulton of Winston Salem, NC and Tulline Roberts and husband, Walter, of Sanford, NC; her treasured granddaughters are Christi Lyons of Spring Hill, TN and Elizabeth Carey of Atlanta, GA and two great grandchildren, Hanna and Garrett Lyons also of Spring Hill, TN.
Her children celebrate memories of her love of home and family, the out-of-doors, gardening and time spent by the sea.
A creative and resourceful person, Doris contributed her talents to her lifelong church, Jonesboro Heights Baptist, in Summer Bible School, Sunday School Classes, church gatherings and as head of communion guild. She was a Girl Scout leader and active in the Gardening Club. She was recognized with the honor of Lee County Home Extension Club Woman of the Year.
Her generous sharing of time and talents has enriched countless lives and stands as her legacy. She will be missed.
