Walter Fuller Hughes, our wonderful Brother, Uncle, friend and good neighbor, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at home surrounded by his family that loved him beyond measure.
He was born in Moore County, the son of the late Jeff Hobson Hughes and Mary Gladys Seawell Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Goldree O. Hughes, sisters; Maxine Smallwood, Rosie Hughes, Myrdie Eva Hogan, brothers; Bishop Hughes, Claude Hughes and Dock Hughes.
Fuller was always a hard worker spending many years in the logging business. His tall laced up logging boots were one of his trademarks. He was a loving husband, caretaker and provider and enjoyed time with family, and friends visiting and sharing meals, cookouts and holiday celebrations. You could pretty much guarantee that Fuller would bake one or two of his famous coconut pies or even a black walnut cake with the walnuts he dried, shelled and cracked himself. Fuller also loved to have a garden and raise vegetables and fruits to preserve and share with anyone that stopped by to visit, because he made sure you wouldn’t go home without blessings from his garden harvest.
A simple man with a tremendous heart who loved what he felt were the most important things in life; God, family, good friends, living in the country surrounded by nature, raising a little garden of his own, planting beautiful flowers and watching them grow so he could pick a big handful and give them to loved family members and friends, going fishing at the river and in nearby ponds, building wagons and pony carts, feeding his animals including his chickens and gathering the eggs. But most of all, Fuller loved just being with family, in his living room, on his front porch or around the dining room table for a meal or just good conversation. If you knew Fuller Hughes, count yourself lucky, but if you were loved by Fuller Hughes, then you already know how blessed you are. He will be deeply missed and he will be forever in our hearts.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his sister Louise Owens of Lee County; Special nephew & niece Robert & Carolyn Harper of Sanford; many other nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of his Hospice Providers for their compassionate professional care. Their support brought comfort not only to him, but also to our entire family. We are forever grateful for their dedication and Kindness.
A Funeral service will be held Friday, June 13, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Euphronia Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the committal service in the church fellowship hall.
