Virginia Dare Winstead Johnson, 91, the wife of the late Douglas Johnson of Sanford, N.C. went home to be with the Lord, on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
Funeral Services will be at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church in Sanford, NC, with the committal service immediately following at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford, NC. The family will receive friends at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church in McDowell Hall from 2:30-3:45 also on Thursday.
Virginia Winstead Johnson was born on November 28, 1932, in Lee County and was the daughter of the late Dorsey Waylon Winstead and Sue Benie Cooper Winstead. She and her husband were the former owner/operators of the Palomino Motel and restaurant, a business staple of Sanford that served many of the surrounding golf courses for some fifty plus years until they retired in 1997.
She was a long-time faithful member of the Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church where she served in many roles from Sunday School Teacher to Director of the Nursery. She also enjoyed singing in the choir and participating in the Women's Missionary Union. Her love for sports included Atlanta Braves baseball and being a long-time Wolfpack Club member. Other hobbies included making crafts with friends and canasta card club. Last but not least she loved the Winstead family. As the youngest of eight children, she was proud of her heritage and cherished family gatherings.
Survivors include; her three children Tanya (Steve) McDowell, Belinda (David) Bond, Duran (Sharon) Johnson; seven grandchildren: Ashley, (Stephen) Petrilyak, Zachary (Ame) McDowell, Hunter Bond, Owen Bond, Cameron Bond, Dakota Johnson, and Colby Johnson; as well as four great grandchildren; Kylie, Sadie, Wyatt, and Evie.
