Virgie Smith Hamer

Virgie Smith Hamer, age 89, of Sanford, NC, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Richmond County on September 3, 1929 to the late Claudius Young Smith and Mae Sharpe Smith Haywood.  In addition to her parents, Virgie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Branson Hamer; brothers, Curtis Smith, Charlie Smith and Alfred Smith; half-brothers, James Smith, Willie Smith, Joe Smith, George Smith, Louis Smith and Marvin Smith and half-sister, Flora Smith.  Virgie worked for many years at Tyson Foods and was a faithful member of Ephesus Baptist Church for over 50 years.

She is survived by her children, Mark Hamer and wife, Danielle of Clayton, Lynn H. Perry McFarland and husband, Tim of Sanford and Shelli York and husband, Brandon of High Point; sisters, Beulah Chappell of Center Hill, Florida and Evelyn Lehrschall of Raleigh; grandchildren, Dana Kennedy, Holly Holder, Stacy Perry, Lindsay York, Craig Hamer, Daniel York and Alex Hamer; great-grandchildren, Coley Kennedy, Olivia Holder, Bella Holder, Charli Kennedy, Brant Kennedy and Garrett Kennedy; sister-in-law, Virginia White of Sanford and niece, Teresa White of Denver, Colorado.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 17, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be held on Monday, February 18, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Ephesus Baptist Church with Dr. David Burroughs and Rev. Sandra Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
