Vernelle Douglas Jones, 91, of Hiawatha Trail, Sanford, went to Heaven surrounded by her family 1/19/20. She was preceded in death by her parents Lonnie Thomas Douglas and Rebecca Swann Douglas, husband Hurley Winiford Jones, and a son, Michael D. Jones.
She is survived by daughters Deborah Jones Suggs and husband Donald, LaVerne Jones Maddox and husband Jimmy, sons Mark DeWayne Jones and wife Laura, all of Sanford, and Kelly Bruce Jones and wife Kelli of Moncure. Also, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Vernelle (Mom, Memaw, Gigi) lived a long, happy, fruitful life. She was always taking care of someone, whether it was her husband, parents, her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, or in-laws, everyone was welcome to stay with Vernelle and Hurley.
Early on in their life together, Vernelle and Hurley ran a general store that catered to the Lobelia community, next to Mt Pleasant church. This was a community store, where everyone hung out at different times during the day swapping tales. It was like an “old-fashioned” Trading Post. Payment methods varied from a trade of produce or wild game, cash, and “I’ll pay you Tuesday”. Then they moved to Sanford…
Vernelle worked at Sears for over 20 years until she retired. She always enjoyed the monthly Sears group luncheons (organized by Ruth Morris) and cookouts and remained very close to her former co-workers.
Vernelle volunteered for several years at Hospice, and also delivered recordings of the Shallow Well Church services to the home-bound members, sharing her love of God and family. She was the best example of what church, home, and Family should represent. She was loved by everyone. The most quoted statement about Vernelle was “She never said anything bad about anyone.”
The family will receive friends at other times at Mrs. Jones’ home.
The family will receive friends from 2PM to funeral hour on Wed., Jan. 22, 2020 at Shallow Well Church. The funeral will begin at 4PM following the visitation. Burial will be after the service also at Shallow Well.
