Thelma Hickman Wall, age 92, of Sanford, NC, died Monday, October 19, 2020 at her daughter’s home in Hillsborough.
She was born in Rockingham County, NC on September 7, 1928 to the late Robert Hickman and Oma Grace Holder Hickman. She was the first of seven children born into a tobacco/farming family.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, of 38 years, Harvey Coolage Wall; daughter Doris Elaine Wall; brothers Robert Hickman, John Deward Hickman, Bruce Edward Hickman, Ronald Wade Hickman, Sr. and sister Margie Hickman Nixon. Thelma was a homemaker and worked part-time with her husband at HC Wall Construction until his death in 1983. She spent the next years caring for her elderly parents, neighbors, and other family members that had illnesses. In her 70’s, she started painting houses with her sister (Shirley) and proceeded to work until she was 82. She was a hard worker and loved mowing her yard, working in her flowers, gardening, baking, and having her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and “extended” children visit her at her home.
She was a member of Swann Station Baptist Church, since 1983, and is a Lifetime member of the Women of the Moose Lodge in Sanford, NC. In 1965, she was the first lady to receive the honor of “Senior Regent College” degree for the Sanford Women of the Moose.
She is survived by her daughter Katherine Wall Glenn and husband Thomas of Hillsborough, NC; sister Shirley Hickman Spivey of Sanford; grandchildren Camille Radford and husband Kelly, Amanda Cox and husband Tony, and Susan Dennis and husband Jarrod; great-grandchildren Karsyn Radford, Will Radford, Amelia Dennis, Ava Dennis, Luke Dennis, Emma Cox, Cooper Cox and Hunter Cox.
Mrs. Wall will lie-in-state, for friends to come pay their respects, at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home on Thursday, October 22, 2020 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The family will not be present at the funeral home but may be visited at the family home.
The funeral service will be Friday, October 23rd at 11:00 AM at Swann Station Baptist Church with Rev. Russell Blackmon and Rev. Casey Mursten officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.
