Susan Lavonne Cole Butler Pilson, age 81, of Cameron, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Born in Lee County, Susan was the daughter of the late Grier and Veora Cole. A graduate of Greenwood High School, she worked for many years as a supervisor at W. Koury Company in Sanford. She was a devoted and active member of Rocky Fork Christian Church.
Susan shared a rich and fulfilling life with her late husband, James Ray Pilson, working alongside him on the family farm where they grew strawberries, sweet potatoes, tobacco, and raised chickens. Known throughout the Cameron community for her generosity, she often shared fresh fruits and vegetables with neighbors and friends.
Her family remembers her most for her warm hospitality, extraordinary cooking and baking, and the joy she brought to every gathering. Susan created a home filled with love, laughter, and the aroma of home-cooked meals. Holidays and everyday meals alike were special events in her home, with her children and grandchildren gathered around her table. A gifted storyteller, she entertained and inspired those around her with tales and memories shared from the heart.
Above all, Susan deeply loved her family and cherished every moment with them.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, James Ray Pilson, and her grandson, Patrick Butler.
Susan is survived by her loving companion, Jerry Buie; her brother, William Cole; her five children: Randy Pilson (Dollie), Donna Callahan (Eddie), Greg Pilson (Betsy), Randall Butler (Jennifer), and Eric Butler (Mechelle); thirteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Willie.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 12:00–1:00 PM at Rocky Fork Christian Church. The funeral service to celebrate Susan’s life will be at 1:00 PM at Rocky Fork Christian Church, with Rev. Phillip Haire officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
