Sallie Jo Wilson Turner, age 88, of Sanford, NC, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at her daughter Mary’s home in Cary, NC, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 8, 1936 to the late Robert F. Wilson and Mildred E. Obenour Wilson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, of 55 years, Richard Eugene “Dick” Turner.
Sallie graduated from Parkview Nursing School, earning her Registered Nursing Degree. She worked many years as a RN in obstetrics and later worked in the Hospice field for Moore County and Surry County. She married her husband Dick in April of 1957 after meeting at a Methodist Church youth group. She loved the Methodist Church and was an active member at Jonesboro United Methodist Church in Sanford. She volunteered her time and talents to the church and made many things to help raise money at the church bazaars. Sallie was a gifted artist and talented musician. She sang many years in the church choir. She could paint, sew, knit, crochet and quilt, among other things. Sallie also volunteered her time to the CUOC (Christians United Outreach Center of Lee County) and local elementary schools where she would read with the students. Most importantly, Sallie was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her family.
She is survived by her children Bruce Turner (Nita) of Hoffman, NC, Susie Reid (Jeff) of Granger, Iowa, Cindy Gordon (Jimmy) of Asheboro, NC, Mary Jafri (Saad) of Cary, NC; grandchildren Caitlin Chancellor (Will), Brianna Dale (Michael), Abby Gordon, Jibreel Jafri, Asiyah Jafri, Amber Kelso, John Reid and great-grandchild Jubilee Dale.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 5, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 10:50 AM in the Parlor of Jonesboro United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary with Rev. Catherine Clyburn, Rev. Bob Albritton and Rev. Becky Albritton officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.
