Ronald “Ronnie” Gunter, age 80, of Sanford, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at his home.
He was born in Lee County on September 14, 1945, to the late Olin Green Gunter and Margaret Jacobs Gunter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Earl Wayne Gunter and Benny Jacobs Gunter. Ronnie spent more than 50 years behind the wheel as a dedicated truck driver and business owner. Family was the heart of Ronnie’s life. He cherished his family, held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, and delighted in the joy brought by his great-grandchildren. Saturdays were sacred to him—he could always be found at 6:30 a.m. sharp at the Landmark Restaurant, enjoying breakfast that, in his words, “just tasted better that time of day.”
Known far and wide for his barbecue, Ronnie loved sharing good food and good company. When he wasn’t cooking, he could often be found relaxing in front of the television, watching classic westerns or old shows that reminded him of simpler times. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and a proud collector. He was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church and in recent years attended Hunt Springs Baptist Church, where he found fellowship and community.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Judy; sons Tim Gunter (Debbie) of Chatham County and Kevin Gunter (Kim) of Climax; grandchildren Knox Gunter (Jana), Lauren Gunter Andrews (Trey) and Krimson Gunter; great-grandchildren Barkley, Beckett and a great-grandson due in May, 2026 and sister Ann Gunter Mason of Sanford.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 6, 2025 from 1:00 PM until 1:50 PM at Hunt Springs Baptist Church. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Dr. Wesley Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends will be received in the fellowship hall following the graveside service.
