Rex Trent Deffenbaugh passed away Thursday, January 30, 2020 at First Health Hospice House in Southern Pines. Rex was born in Albuquerque New Mexico on March 31, 1954 to Arthur and Doris Deffenbaugh.
Rex lived and breathed everything mechanical from the time he was a child. Rex was the owner and operator of Happy Japs Auto Repair for 35 years. In the mid-eighties, Rex started racing with the Sports Car Club of America, and quickly made it a family affair taking his wife Patricia and soon after his two children Justin and Blair Deffenbaugh to the track with him. His two sons earned their competition licenses in the same car Rex did, and they will continue his racing legacy. In addition to racing with the SCCA, Rex served for many years on the North Carolina Region Board of Directors, including Regional Executive for four years.
Rex is celebrated by his family that incudes his wife Patricia Deffenbaugh, father Arthur Deffenbaugh, his brother Forrest Deffenbaugh, his two sons Justin and Blair Deffenbaugh, Justin’s wife Ericka Deffenbaugh, and Blair’s Fiancé Laura Paap. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 1st from 2pm to 4pm at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The family will be continuing the celebration of Rex’s life at Virginia International Raceway at a later date.
