Peggy Jane McLendon Coggin, age 85, of Sanford, stepped into her Heavenly Home on January 12, 2022 surrounded by her three children in her home.
She was born in Lee County on September 19, 1936 to the late Willie Thomas (Bill) McLendon, Sr. and the late Margaret Elizabeth Harrington McLendon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by “the love of her life” of 65 years, Willis James (Jimmie) Coggin, her sister Elizabeth Bryan McLendon Patterson, brother John Robert McLendon, and grandson Timothy James Willett. She is survived by her brother Willie Thomas (W.T.) McLendon, II (Nancy) of Sanford, sister-in-law Marie McLendon (wife of John) of Sanford, daughter Marsha Farrell (Joseph) of Brevard, NC, daughter Ramona Willett (Gary) of Sanford, and Greg Coggins (Tricia) of N. Fort Myers, FL. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Nicholas Farrell (Rachel) of Whigham, GA, Diana Farrell White (Brian) of Radford, VA, Andrew Farrell (Anna) of Norwich, UK, Jeremy Willett of Greenville, NC, Stephen Willett (fiancé Samantha Houston) of Fayetteville, NC, Kasey Willett Maness (Philip) of Sanford, NC, Cameron Coggins of Tampa, FL, Riley Escalle of Atlanta, GA, Lydia and Grace Coggins of N. Fort Myers, FL. She was also blessed to have 14 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and very special in-laws.
Peggy graduated from Greenwood in 1954 and then attended Watts Nursing School from 1954-1955. She worked for Dr. Mary Margaret McLeod, Pediatrician, for 16 years as a nurse. She was known and loved by all who called her, “nurse Peggy”. After Dr. McLeod’s retirement, she kept some of her grandchildren. Peggy and Jimmie were involved in the Gideon Ministry since 1983. Over the years she and Jimmie purchased and distributed thousands of Bibles. She would place Bibles in doctor and dental offices, hospitals, and would give Bibles to graduating nurses. Peggy and Jimmie were members of Grace Chapel Church for 64 years where together they served in the AWANA program (Sparks) for over 20 years and Peggy taught the third grade Sunday School class for over 30 years. Peggy was also a charter member of the Annie Belle Register Missionary Society at Grace Chapel. She began attending Cool Springs Baptist Church in April 2018 and remained faithful watching the services remotely even when she was unable to attend.
The family would like to say a special “Thank You” to Community Home Care & Hospice for the compassionate care given to Peggy over the past year. They especially want to recognize Kim Rodriguez, Bailey Marona, Linda Thorne, Stephanie Woodall, Ann Oldham, Sayra Baquedano, Tammy McDowell and Cheryl Sovacool for their servant’s heart and love that they showered over her.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Cool Springs Baptist Church from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM with Rev. Matt Martin, Rev. Diana Farrell White, Lee Logwood and Rev. Bob Yandle officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Chapel Church Cemetery.
