Michael Gray Scaggs, age 25, of Sanford, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2026 at his home.
He was born in Lee County on February 3, 2001 to Kathy Scaggs Dwyer and John William Searles. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather John R. Searles, Jr. and uncle James Huddleston.
Michael’s life was rooted in faith and service. He shared a close and personal relationship with his Lord and Savior. He believed in doing right by people, offering help without hesitation. He took great pride in his work as a mechanic and was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to go the extra mile. Whether in the shop or on the side of the road, he never hesitated to stop and help someone in need. In his spare time, he found peace in the outdoors. He loved fishing and hunting. He will be remembered for his faith, his hard work, and his generous heart. His life, though far too short, left a lasting impact on those who knew him, and his memory will continue to live on through the lives he touched.
He is survived by his mother Kathy Scaggs Dwyer of Sanford; father John Searles of Lillington; grandparents Debbie and Danny Scaggs of Sanford and Cynthia and David Cobb of Lillington; brothers John Searles, Jr. (Jordan) of Lillington and Landon Dwyer of Fayetteville; sister Jolie Dwyer (Eli) of Cameron and Destiny Glosson of Lillington; cousin Dylan Adams of Sanford; nephew Camden Searles; stepmother Tiffany Glosson; stepfather Joseph Dwyer; uncles Rusty Huddleston of Sanford and Daniel Godfrey of California and many other special aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate Michael's life will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Baker officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
