Mary Grayson (Mayfield) Ashburn

Mary Grayson Mayfield Ashburn, age 71, of Sanford, NC, passed away unexpectedly following a devastating aneurism at home.

She was born in Rockledge, Florida on November 13, 1954 to the late Grayson William Mayfield and Zelma “Sally” Wicker Mayfield.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Russell “Russ” Webster Hunt.  Mary is survived by her husband, of 37 years, Edward “Ed” Dance Ashburn; siblings Tom Hunt of Florida, Marie Whetstone of Texas, brother Grayson W. Mayfield, Jr. (Dee) of South Carolina, sister Elain Mayfield of South Carolina; sister-in-law Linda Hunt McBryde (Larry) of Sanford; numerous nieces and nephews and a multitude of four-legged friends.

Mary was raised in both Florida and Sanford, NC.  She worked 26 years at Central Carolina Hospital as a Registered Nurse, but her passion was serving un-homed cats and dogs through her non-profit, Lending Paws a Hand, Inc., alongside her husband Ed.  The rescue community and animals throughout our area will miss Mary’s passion and love for these animals.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at a later date.
