Obituary

Margie Isabel Groce Mann died peacefully at her home, February 19, 2021. She was 98 years old. Margie was born in Lee County, May 19, 1922 to the late David Alton Groce and Leosia Allred Groce.  Margie grew up in Jonesboro and lived her adult life in Lee County.  She married Harold Lindsey Mann, Sr. and raised five children: Harold L. Mann, Jr., David Groce Mann, Ruth Anne Mann Rollins, William Joseph Mann and Edward Harvey Mann.  She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold L. Mann, Sr. (2003), her son David Groce Mann, her son-in-law Bruce Rollins, her grandchild Kirk Mann, and her brothers and sister: Winfred Britten Groce (Frances), Clarence Bradshaw Groce (Rayba), Samuel Hayworth Groce (Irene), and Candace Ruth Groce.  She is survived by Harold Mann, Jr. (Dot), Jasper, Ga; Anne Mann Rollins, Mocksville, NC; William Joseph Mann (Ann), Raleigh, NC; Edward Harvey Mann (Frances), Greenville, NC, and daughter-in-law Elaine Mann (Macon, Ga). She has 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and several beloved nephews and nieces.

Margie not only lovingly raised a large family, she also participated in helping manage Mann’s Hardware and kept a deep involvement in the Methodist Church.  Alongside Harold and working with Julia Mann, she helped manage the gift shop in Mann’s Hardware. She began her work in the church in 1949 with the Women’s Society of Christian Service and the Wesley Service Guild at Jonesboro Methodist Church. She served for five years as Treasurer for the WSCS in the NC Conference (1963-68).  She was elected President of the NC Conference United Methodist Women in 1968 and served until 1972.  She was elected as a delegate to three General Conference (1972, 1976, and 1980).  She was elected to lead the delegation to the 1972 General Conference.  She also served on the Conference Episcopal Committee; the Board of the Methodist Retirement Home; and for eight years on the denomination’s General Council on Finance and Administration.  In 1971 she was elected a delegate to the World Methodist Conference.  In 1982 Methodist University honored her with its Medallion for her significant service to the women of the NC Conference and the general church.

Margie found time to knit, play Bridge, read, and keep up with her large family. She was a marvelous cook, enjoyed many months at Long Beach, and loved having her family come and visit. Her family wants to thank Renee Clayton for her long and excellent devotion to and care for Margie; to Jewell Frye who was a wonderful neighbor and cared for Margie with great skill; to Melinda Moses Carlyle and Mary Gracie Lawrence; and Community Hospice for their recent attention and care.
