Madeline Campbell Obituary

Madeline Brooks Campbell, 100, of Sanford, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. She was blessed to be at her home with her family by her side.  She was born on August 25, 1919, in Chatham County, NC, to the late Claude and Mollie Thomas Brooks. At the age of 16, she was baptized in the Rocky River and joined Rives Chapel Baptist Church. Her faith in Jesus Christ defined her life.

A graduate of Bonlee High School, Madeline married Alton Campbell, her husband of 64 years, in 1943. She was a faithful member of Jonesboro United Methodist Church; teaching children’s Sunday School classes, leading a Women’s Circle, and participating in numerous other programs at the church.

Madeline was active in Girl Scouting for over 15 years, both as a leader at the local level and as an outdoor trainer for the Pines of Carolina region. She was an advocate of Meals on Wheels, faithfully delivering meals until the age of 88, when her husband’s health began to decline.

She is survived by her daughter, MaryAnn Cramer, and son-in-law, David, of Raleigh; granddaughter Sarah Ames and husband Daniel of Boone; granddaughter Alyssa Vest of Houston, Texas; and step-grandchildren Sean Cramer and Kailyn Cramer of Raleigh. She is also survived by her sister, Marjorie Johnson of Rocky Mount, as well as many nieces and nephews who were faithful to visit and care for her and were greatly loved.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Alton, she was preceded in death by her sisters Willie Brooks, Eloise Burke, and Wilma Lemons and brothers D.C. Brooks, Russell Brooks, Hoke Brooks, and Edwin Brooks.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, February 22, at Jonesboro United Methodist Church in Sanford, with visitation starting at 1pm at the adjacent Wesley Center. Burial following the service will be at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford. In lieu of flowers, Madeline’s wish was that donations be made to Jonesboro United Methodist Church, 407 West Main Street, Sanford, NC  27332, and designated to youth scholarships and outreach.
