Joseph Cecil Calendine, Sr., passed away on his 90th birthday, June 18, 2025, in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Born on June 18, 1935, in Canton, Ohio, Joseph lived a full and faithful life marked by service, quiet strength, and devotion to his family.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before building a long and respected career as a facilities engineer. Known for his steady hands and creative mind, Joe had a special love for all things mechanical. He found great joy working on and driving Volkswagens, lawn mowers and golf carts, and spending countless contented hours in his backyard shed — his happy place. He served the Lord as choir director in several local churches; he so enjoyed playing the organ and singing hymns.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Delmer Calendine, his brother, Daniel Calendine, and his sister, Jean Schwing.
Joe was a loyal fan of Duke University basketball, and he cheered on NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt. He enjoyed classic episodes of Star Trek, delighted in helping with Operation Christmas Child, and, above all, cherished every moment spent with his wife, his children, and his grandchildren. His kindness to others was legendary; his ready smile and cheerfulness made the people in his daily walk feel as though they’d met a friend.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Shirley Carroll Calendine, whose companionship and love were at the center of his life. He leaves behind his three loving children: Theresa Clark (Lanny), Kelley Desjarlais (Donny), and Jay Calendine. He is also survived by a dearly loved sister, Mary Ann Haut (Jiggs), of Medina, OH, and many nieces and nephews. He was a proud grandfather to Cadi Vines (Erique), Ian Calendine, Daniel Desjarlais, Christian Desjarlais, Jamie Calendine, and Jennifer Short. His grandchildren brought him joy and laughter, and he leaves behind memories they will treasure forever.
Joe will be remembered for his steady presence, his generous spirit, his excellent sense of humor, his staggering intelligence, and his constant willingness to help others. He lived humbly, loved deeply, and gave quietly; his legacy is one of devotion, integrity, and care.
A service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Bridges Cameron Funeral Home. A private graveside service will follow at the McDougald Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1901 Beachwood Drive on Monday, June 23, 2025 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
