John Ed Matthews

John Ed Matthews, age 84, of Sanford, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on May 4, 1938, to the late Alton Page Matthews and Elsie Myrtle Calcutt Matthews.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Julius Matthews and Ralph Matthews.  John Ed owned and operated a backhoe service and farmed in the same community his whole life.

He never met a stranger, and his sense of humor was one of a kind. Over the years, he enjoyed the mountain trips he took with his wife. He also enjoyed going to Hardee’s each morning to have breakfast with friends which they referred to as “the office”.  John Ed will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

  Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred; sons, Randy Matthews of Sanford, Banjo Matthews and wife, Zelda of Sanford and Dexter Matthews and wife, Charla of Carthage; sister, Sarah Margaret Wicker of Sanford; three grandchildren, Morgan Wells and husband, Matthew, Justin Matthews and Jacob Matthews and wife, Ashley and two great-grandchildren, Emma Parker and Jasan Matthews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 23, 2022, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Emmanuel Baptist Church.  The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor Mike Garner and Pastor Terry Pleasants officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
