John Royal Covert Jr., 79, of Siler City, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
Born on September 6, 1946, in Chatham County, John was the son of the late John Royal Covert Sr. and Mildred Brafford Covert. Following his honorable service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, John continued his lifelong commitment to serving his country as a civilian employee with the Directorate of Public Works at Fort Bragg. He dedicated many years to supporting the Army and its mission before retiring.
John had a passion for NASCAR and rarely missed a race, whether attending in person or cheering on his favorite drivers from home. In his younger years, he loved riding motorcycles and spending time on the open road. He also enjoyed collecting NASCAR memorabilia, Ford Mustang collectibles, hats, and shoes. Above all, John treasured time with his family and was happiest when surrounded by those he loved.
He is survived by his sons, Anthony Covert (Renee) of Sanford, Brian Covert of Siler City, and Justin Covert (Amanda) of Sanford; his grandchildren, Kensey Taylor (R.J.), Kyler Coats (Zeb), Connor Covert, Camden Covert, and Chloe Covert; four great-grandchildren; his sisters, Ethel Lindley and Brenda Gunter, both of Siler City; and his faithful companion, Peanut, who remained by his side for the past 18 years.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Levan Gunnels.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who provided care, comfort, and support during John's final days.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 7019 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Siler City, NC 27344. Visitation with family and friends will follow in the fellowship hall.
