“Joe Jr.” Joseph Alvie Luck, Jr. age 77, of the Deep River Community, passed away, Monday, February 26, 2024 at Sanford Health & Rehabilitation with his family by his side.
He was born in Lee County on November 18, 1946 to the late Joseph Alvie Luck, Sr. and Maggie Evlyeen Dawkins Luck. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Martha Lou Luck.
Joe Jr. is survived by his niece Amanda Luck Frye (Chris); cousins Kelly Gray (Tony) of Hope Mills, Steven Gilmore (Cheryl) of Cameron and numerous cousins.
Joe Jr. graduated from Deep River High School in 1965 then joined the United States Army serving two tours in Vietnam. He served in various stateside locations and in Germany. He always said he’d go back again if the country would have sent him and he wanted to serve during Desert Storm but health issues prevented him from being selected. After his retirement from the Army, he continued to serve in the local National Guard Unit for 25 years. He was a proud member of the Old Dawgs 2nd Bn 252nd Armor Hell’s Guard. He also worked many years for Allied Fibers / Honeywell and retired from there in 2001. He was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church.
He considered himself a “modern day hermit”. He loved being at home, on his land and reading books. When he was born, he was a full-fledged “Mamma’s Boy” and he was proud of that fact. His favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing and hanging out on his houseboat at Jordan Lake and tying fishing lures. Joe Jr. was also a certified reenactor at House in the Horseshoe Historic Site. His family and friends will miss his stories and warm demeanor.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 1, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Flat Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service and other times at Joe Jr.’s house, 325 Luck Lane, Sanford, NC 27330.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Tarheel Minutemen Foundation at 7410 Chapel Hill Road, Raleigh, NC 27607 supporting the NCNG Museum.
