Jimmy Ray (J.R.) Stone

Jimmy Ray Stone (J.R.), age 82, of Sanford, NC, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2023, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

He was born in Lee County on December 3, 1940, to the late Jesse James Stone and Anna Mitchell Stone.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Janie Hilliard, J.C. Stone, Billie Cummings, Margaret Cameron, Faye Fosnough, and Gilbert “Mack” Stone.

J.R. retired from Lee County after 30 years of service where he worked in the Maintenance Department.  He was a huge Carolina Fan.  In his spare time, he enjoyed coaching and refereeing the youth of Lee County in both basketball, baseball, and football was inducted into the North Carolina Little League Hall of Honors.  J.R. was a Man of God and a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.  He was a proud, loving, and devoted husband, father, and Papa.  He will be missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Patricia Sharpe Stone; children, Rhonda S. Cameron and husband, Mack of Sanford, Jimmy Scott Stone and wife, Donna of Fuquay Varina and Rae S. Campbell and husband, Jeff of Sanford; grandchildren, Jessica Gregory, Kaitlyn Bryant, Trevor Stone, L’oreal Jones, Andrew Jones, Chase Campbell, Chance Campbell and Mallory Campbell; great-grandchildren, Charles Bryant, Eden Bryant, Gentry Gregory, Slade Gregory, Kiley Dixon and Suttyn Foushee and a lifelong friend, Harvey Godfrey.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 21, 2023, from 5:00 PM until 7:30 PM at Emmanuel Baptist Church (632 McCrimmon Road, Carthage, NC).  A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, May 22, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Garner officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
