Jean Klein Obituary

Jean Jefferson Klein, 94, originally of Rochester, New York, passed away on June 5, 2018, at the residence of her daughter, Catherine, of Broadway, North Carolina.  Born the daughter of Charles Frederick Jefferson and Mabel Thomas Jefferson, she was raised in Rochester, NY. Jean attended Vassar College for two years and then the University of Rochester, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in sociology and psychology.  Although she graduated from the University of Rochester, she continued the valued friendships she made while at Vassar and volunteered as an editor for the Vassar College Alumni Newspaper, until she was 91 years old.

In 1966, Jean and her family moved to West Hartford, Connecticut. After raising her children, she worked as an Assistant Editor at The Herald newspaper in New Britain, Connecticut from 1977 through 1995.  She was a devoted member of the Town and Country Club in Hartford, Connecticut, for many years, and provided editing services to the Club newspaper.  She also volunteered with the Junior League. She moved to Edgewood, Kentucky in 2008, to live near her daughter, Laura and family.  She moved to North Carolina this past November, where she lived with her daughter, Catherine, until her death.  Throughout her life, she loved ballet, playing jazz piano, sewing, animals, and raising her family.

Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lincoln Klein and her brother, Ralph Harvey Jefferson.  She is survived by her adoring children, Keith (Linda) Jefferson Klein of Edmond, Oklahoma, Catherine Klein Nakayama of Broadway, North Carolina, and Laura (John) Klein Voorhees of Edgewood, Kentucky.  She is also survived by her brother, Charles Edward Jefferson, II, of Virginia. She leaves behind nine loving grandchildren, Edward Nakayama, Jeffrey Nakayama, Jennifer Barnes, Courtney Klein, Craig Klein, Alexandra Voorhees, Charles “CJ” Voorhees, Tyler Voorhees and John Voorhees. She will be buried at The Old Village Cemetery in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, at a later date.  In lieu of sending flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: Hospice Care of St. Elizabeth, 1 S.
