Janet Elizabeth Wooten Simpson, 82, of Vass, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at 3:04 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst, surrounded by her family.
Born on December 29, 1942, in Harnett County, Janet was the daughter of the late Oscar Wooten and Jeanette Pointer. She is survived by her sister, Droxie Hennings (Herman).
Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, George “Bud” Simpson. She is survived by her sons: Michael (Fernia), Stephen (Sylvia), Ricky (Karen), Darrell (Stormy); grandchildren: Michael (Crystal), Amanda (Cortt), Tiffany (T.J.), Stephany (Zach), Ricky (Jessica), Travis (Emily), Faith, and Katie; great-grandchildren: Makayla (Nathan), Addison, Cortney (Zachary), Sydney, Isaac, Nathan, Samuel, Nolan, Bryce, Gabriel, Emerson, Ava, Joy; and her first great-great-grandchild, Eloise, expected in July.
In her early years, Janet worked at Wyatt Knitting & Quality Mills before joining her husband in building their family business, Simpson and Sons Plumbing, where she worked until her retirement.
A woman of deep faith and personal commitment to Jesus Christ, Janet was one of the founding members of Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Lemon Springs. She was a pillar of faithfulness and will be deeply missed by all, especially her friends in the “Classic Seniors” fellowship group.
When she wasn’t making rounds to check on her loved ones, Janet volunteered at Calvary Education Center, where she was affectionately known as “Canteen Granny.” Many people simply called her “Grandma Janet,” a name that captured her warmth and generosity. She had a way of making everyone feel special and included, adopting many honorary children and grandchildren over the years.
Throughout her life, Janet enjoyed cooking for her family, especially during the holidays when her Thanksgiving dressing became a beloved tradition no one wanted to miss. She was known for her generosity and always offered kind, encouraging words to everyone. Some of her most treasured moments were family trips to the mountains and holiday gatherings when her whole family was together.
Janet leaves behind a legacy of family-centered faithfulness and generosity. Her strong will and steadfast devotion to her church and family left a lasting impact that will be honored for generations.
The family will receive friends Thursday, May 29, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:50 PM at Calvary Pentecostal Church. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM with Rev. Stephen Simpson officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church Cemetery in Vass, NC.
