James “Jim” Max Wood, age 81, of Sanford, NC, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2026 at his home, with his family by his side.
He was born in Lee County, NC on June 23, 1944 to the late Carlie Wood and Nellie Hickman Wood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Bill Wood, Johnny Wood, Ann Chaffee, Delores McIntosh, and Linda Pope.
Jim was a member of Olivia Evangelical Presbyterian Church and worked most of his life in the construction and building industry including Lee Builder Mart, Womble Builders and TBI Builders. He enjoyed NASCAR, sports of every kind, fishing, spending time with buddies, and coaching baseball. Above all, Jim treasured his family and loved every opportunity to be with them. His kindness, friendship, and love will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Teresa “Flo” Combs Wood; son Brandon Wood (Karrie) of Houston, TX; daughter Jennifer Wood Smith (Alan) of Sanford; sisters Judi Darroch (Mitch), Tammy Drzewicki (Walt) and grandchildren Jacob & Colton Smith and Aidan & Logan Wood.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 1:00 PM until 1:50 PM at Olivia Evangelical Presbyterian Church, A Funeral service to honor Jim’s life will follow at 2:00 PM officiated by Rev. Karyn Cartier. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.
In honor of Jim, the family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Olivia Evangelical Presbyterian Church, PO Box 88, Olivia, NC 28368.
