James Tolliver Obituary

James Monroe Tolliver, age 89, of Sanford, NC, died Sunday, October 14, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born in Neon, KY to the late Sampson Hillard Tolliver and Myrtle Isaac Tolliver.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by siblings, Joel Wright, Martin Tolliver, Alpha Church, Ethel Mills, and Osie Cox.  James served his country in the US Army in the special forces Green Beret serving in Korea, Germany and Vietnam.  He was wounded twice and received a Purple Heart.  He worked for the Lee County Sheriff Dept. as a Court Bailiff from 1980 to 1993.  James was a member at Grace Indep. Baptist Church and Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church.  He served as a RA Leader, Building and Grounds Committee, and Hospitality Committee.  Civic Clubs included American Legion, VFW, DAV, Optimist Club, Rescue Squad volunteer, and volunteer Baseball Coach for 16 years at Lee County Recreation Department.

Surviving relatives include his wife of 65 years, Daphine Gravley Tolliver of the home; sons, Shane Hillard Tolliver and wife Gloria of Salisbury. Zane Kevin Tolliver and wife Karen of Clayton, James Aaron Tolliver of Greensboro, and Vernon Frank Tolliver and wife Dorothy of Cameron; a daughter Sharon Inis Tolliver Johnson and husband Ronnie of Sanford; special friend and caregiver Dan Hagerman; a sister Ruth Burnside of Cleveland, OH; grandsons, Bradley McBride (Brandy), Sean Tolliver (Samantha), Christopher Tolliver, Wesley Tolliver, Samuel Tolliver and James Gabriel Tolliver; granddaughters, Andrea Alexander (Chris), Christy Cordell (Adam), Stacey Bumgarner (Casey), Tiffany Tolliver, Hannah Tolliver, Beatrice Tolliver and Katherine Tolliver; great grandsons, Ethan Alexander, Ryan Alexander, Jayden Cordell, and Corbin Bumgarner; great granddaughters, Sydney Tolliver, Macy Bumgarner, Jaycee Cordell, Kyleigh Bumgarner; special nephews, Greg Mills (Kathy), Robert Smith (Linda), Alvin Wright (Sherry); special nieces, Adrian Reynolds (Craig), Twana Baxter (Don), and Dianne Cook; many loved nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, from 6-8PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.  The funeral will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018, 11AM at Jonesboro Hgts. Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Sayles, Darryl Wood and Shane Tolliver presiding.  Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens with military honors.
