James Thomas Smith

James Thomas Smith, age 84, of Sanford, NC, passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born in Johnston County, NC on July 13, 1936 to the late Dallas Smith and Mae Johnson Smith.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Anthony Smith; step-father Ranson Stephenson; grandson James Smith and wife Jenny.  James retired from Carnes Company after 40 years of service.  After his retirement, he worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart for over 15 years and also many years at San-Lee Park.   He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Dare Champion Smith; sons Pete Smith and wife Lois of Sanford, Mark Smith of Sanford; daughter Jennifer Kupris and husband Phillip of Tennessee; sister Myrtle Smith of Sanford; grandchildren Teria Rodgers, Teresa Baker, Nicole Saeny, Ashley Walden, Lynda Stewart, Brittany Hughes and 27 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.  The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM in the chapel with Pastor Jason Dowdell officiating.  Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens. The family asks that those attending the services to wear a mask.
