Mr. Henry Bruce Jackson, age 84, of Southern Pines, NC, passed away, Monday, July 24, 2024.
Bruce was born at home in May 1940 in Vass, NC to the late Henry Dallas and Eloise Marks Jackson. Raised on a small tobacco farm with his 3 siblings, Bruce grew up understanding the importance of education and family. After graduating from Vass-Lakeview High school in 1958, he joined the Navy with 3 friends from his graduating class. He loved to tell the stories from his three years, eleven months and twenty-eight days stationed throughout the northeast serving his country in Rhode Island, Virginia and Maryland. After his naval discharge he studied at East Carolina College graduating with a degree in business administration. He worked for his family’s cucumber market during his breaks from school, which is where he met his beloved wife Emma Jean Morris Jackson. They married in 1968.
He worked for the United Phone Company, which is where developed the passion for computers that shaped his career. In 1978 he completed his MBA at UNC Charlotte and soon began teaching computer programming for the NC community college system. He was eager to stay on the forefront of technology with a career in programming and delighted in teaching computer skills to the next generation. Bruce and Emma settled in Sanford to be near both of their families and were active members of the community through their membership at Jonesboro Presbyterian Church. He relished all opportunities to teach and connect, whether through his work at Central Carolina Community College, for his Sunday school class at JPC or as a youth leader for the church.
After his retirement he continued to provide computer support to his church, family and friends as a way to stay active and have an excuse for more story telling. His favorite topics were college athletics, classic cars, and foot tapping country music. But most of all, he loved to talk about being Papa to Jackson.
He is survived by his only daughter, Anne Mushow, her husband David, and son Jackson of Apex; sister Janice Cameron of Vass; brother David Jackson, his wife Sheryl Anne of Lakeview; brother Roy Jackson, his wife Lisa of Southern Pines. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and friends who he loved spending time with, telling stories and making them laugh.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 28, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Bridges and Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Monday, July 29, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Jonesboro Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Wayside Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
