Evelyn (Harrup) Matthews

Evelyn Harrup Matthews, age 88, of Sanford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at Sanford Health & Rehabilitation.

She was born in Virginia to the late Richard Lee Harrup and Emma Lee Harrup.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother Richard “Jack” Harrup and son-in-law Rick Lewis.  Evelyn worked hard all of her life and enjoyed the many people she got to know.  She never met a stranger and all who knew and loved her called her “Granny”.  Evelyn enjoyed trips to the beach, fishing, a good cup of strong coffee, spending time with her pets, vegetable gardening and preserving what she grew.  She will be missed.

She is survived by her loving husband of over 30 years Lemuel “Red” Matthews; daughters Marie K. Bryant, Diane K. Lewis and Brenda J. Mitchem (Davy), all of Virginia; grandchildren Lewis T. Bryant, III, Brian T. Hughes, Brandon T. Hughes, Bradley T. Hughes, Ronald D. Lewis, Jr. and Christopher C. Lewis; great-grandchildren Jade Hylton, Leif Hughes, Ayden Hughes, Logan Lewis, Seth Lewis, Halle Lewis, Noelle Lewis and CJ Lewis and a special little friend Lily.

 The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 11, 2026 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church (5422 St. Andrews Church Road, Sanford, NC 27332) with Pastor John Baker officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
