Ernest Paul Evans, Jr., 74, of Sanford, passed away at home with his wife Edith by his side, on December 11, 2024, after a long illness. Born in Cape Fear, he was the son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth (Cumbee) Evans.
Ernie was an Army veteran who served two tours in Viet Nam. Following his military service, he established himself as an electrician and raised a family with his first wife, Betty. He retired after working as an electrician on nuclear power plants across the country. Ernie loved singing and playing guitar and will be remembered for his music.
Ernie’s earthly journey may have come to an end, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends. He is reunited with his parents and his brothers Donald and Terry, who predeceased him. Ernie is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Edith Gay Evans, his sons Ernest Paul III and Anthony, immediate family Connie Shepherd, Cathy Schneider, Robin Mitchell, and Timothy Cumbee.
The family acknowledges the continued care provided by the team at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham during Ernie’s long illness. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Veterans Charities or Harnett County EMS, Fire, and Sheriff for their services.
The family will receive friends at Bridges & Cameron Funeral Home on Sunday, December 15, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial service celebrating Ernie’s life will be held following at 7:00 PM in the Bridges & Cameron Funeral Home Chapel.
A second memorial service will be held in Shallotte, NC, following the Christmas holiday. Saturday, January 4, 2025 Church of Christ Shallotte, NC.
