Douglas Gunter Johnson, 93, husband of Virginia W. Johnson of Sanford, N.C. went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 17,2021.
Funeral Services will be at 4:00pm on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church in Sanford, NC, with the commital service immediately following at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford, NC. The family will receive friends at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church in the McDowell Hall from 2:30 – 4:00 also on Thursday.
Doug Johnson was born on September 5, 1927, in Lee County and was the son of the late Jefferson D. Johnson and Rose Ella Gunter Johnson. He was the former owner/operator of the Palomino Motel and restaurant, a business staple of Sanford that served many of the surrounding golf courses for some fifty plus years until he retired in 1997. He was a long-time faithful member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church where he served in many roles from Sunday School Teacher to Chairman of the Deacons. He had a true servant’s heart for the Lord. He also had a love of sports that led him to fulfill his passion to coach Little League Baseball for some twenty-five years. His goal to make a difference with his coaching was returned full circle with the many fond memories of the players he coached.
Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Virginia; three children: Tanya (Steve) McDowell, Belinda (David) Bond, and Duran (Sharon) Johnson; seven grandchildren: Ashley (Stephen) Petrilyak, Zachary (Ame) McDowell, Hunter Bond, Owen Bond, Cameron Bond, Dakota Johnson and Colby Johnson; and four great grandchildren: Kylie, Sadie, Wyatt and Evie.
