Obituary

Donald “Sonny” Gene Steen, age 83, of Sanford, NC, died Saturday, November 7, 2020 at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Clay County, Arkansas on December 16, 1936 to the late Joseph Franklin Steen and Mary Anna Rebecca Sumner Steen.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Donna Sue Steen and siblings Luzettia Gossett, Glendora Perez, Drewie Steen, James Steen and Delbert Steen. Mr. Steen served our country in the United States Army.  He was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church and enjoyed Nascar, tractors and working at the Ole Mill Crank Up.  Mr. Steen was a big history buff and enjoyed visiting national and historical landmarks.  Mr. Steen was a masonry instructor for Fayetteville Technical Community College.

He is survived by his beloved wife, of 62 years, Bessie Mae Rollins Steen; son Donald Steen, II and wife Pamela of Sanford; daughter Lisa Hinesley and husband Steve of Sanford; siblings Betty Grissom, Bonnie Stinson and husband Glen, Martha Dover and husband John, Kay Potter and husband Jarrell, Melba Exum and husband Don, Jimmy Steen and wife Debbie and Charles Steen; grandchildren Andrea Hinesley, Christopher Hinesley and wife Jenna, Faith Steen, Angela Steen and two great-grandsons Colt and Owen Hinesley.

A private graveside service will be held at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers please consider donations to a charity of your choice or Relay for Life.  Friends are welcome to come to the funeral home and sign his register book for condolences Monday, November 9th to Tuesday morning by noon.
