Charles "Edgar" Patterson Obituary

Charles “Edgar” Patterson of Broadway, NC, a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, went to be with his Heavenly and earthly fathers in glory on April 5th, at Duke Hospital in Raleigh.

Living on the same family farm his entire life, Edgar loved the land, and even though he worked full-time at Allied/Honeywell for much of his adult life after graduating from Boone Trail School in 1976, he tirelessly worked it as a farmer until his body would no longer allow in this last year. 40 years after graduating high school, Edgar courageously earned an Associate’s Degree in sustainable agriculture and spent the years following proudly growing safe and healthy foods for his community and meeting new friends at farmers markets, selling as Cool Springs Farm.

In November of 1979, Edgar married Lucy “Gail” Upchurch Patterson, who he would love for the remainder of his life, becoming an instant Father to two elementary aged sons. Together, over the next 45 years, Edgar and Gail added two daughters to the family, and created a life built on love of Jesus and family, dependability, hard work and simplicity. A life-long member of Cool Springs Church, Edgar was a Sunday School teacher and willing steward to serve in whatever way he could. Edgar was known as a friendly and helpful man and a loving Husband, Daddy and Papa.

Whether hitting popflys after work until dark for his children to catch, calling his Mother twice daily after his Father passed in 2019, or pouring into his Bible study, he was committed as the day is long and modeled a strong work ethic, committed to efforts with eternal impact. Edgar enjoyed farming, fishing, Civil War history, and cheering on the North Carolina Tarheels. Edgar was preceded in death by his Father and closest friend, Charles Patterson, and in-laws Bryant and Frances Upchurch.

He will be deeply missed by his mother, Sue Logan Patterson and wife, Gail Upchurch Patterson, both of Broadway, four children, John Wicker (Nicki) and Brenda Patterson Holder of Broadway, Bryan Wicker (Kimberly) of Creedmoor and Jamie Patterson Swider (Kevin) of Cornelius, brother Michael Dellinger (Pam) of Robbins, ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many friends and family members.

The family will receive guests at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home in Sanford, NC on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 from 6:00-8:00, and celebrate Edgar’s life and funeral on Wednesday, April 10th at 3:00 at Cool Springs Church in Broadway. The Reverend Connie Arnold, will officiate the funeral.
