Beverly Amelia Radke Fillio, age 79, of Sanford NC, died on March 30, 2022, at FirstHealth Hospice, West End after suffering a stroke.
Born on September 22, 1942, she was the daughter and only child of the late Forrest and Constance Monticone of Pittsfield, MA. She graduated from Pittsfield High School and later from the University of Connecticut School of Nursing.
She met the love of her life, John Louis (“Jack”) Fillio, one evening at The Green Door in Lanesborough, MA, where she memorably referred to him as “the little Fillio boy.” After a brief courtship they were engaged at Puffers Pond in Amherst, MA, and married on February 22, 1960. Before they were blessed with children and later with their arrivals, they lived in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Alaska, and New Hampshire.
An incredible wife and mother, she lovingly raised three children despite their combined attempts to find the limits of her patience. She was an enviable cook and baker of the highest caliber and passed on many of those skills to her children. However, there was one occasion where their constructive criticism of her dinner fare was not well-received; the following evening they enjoyed a can of Dinty Moore stew, and the feedback loop was closed for good.
In the late 70s she returned to the workforce as an office manager for brokerage Rogers & Lamb (Basking Ridge, NJ) and later a similar capacity for the Costello Insurance Agency (Haverhill, MA). In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and tennis and was a voracious reader, a symbiotic relationship she cultivated in her role as a volunteer with the East Kingston (NH) Public Library.
After the couple both retired, they moved one more time within East Kingston before concluding that massive snowfalls were an annual event, thus packing their bags for the warmer climate of Sanford NC. Landing in the Carolina Trace community, she soon found herself joyfully busy with wonderful new friends, a plethora of social clubs and activities, and spending all time in-between with her best friend and true love.
She is survived by her husband John of 62 incredible years, her daughter Amanda Mix of Sanford, NC, her son Christopher Fillio of Holly Springs, NC, her five grandchildren Ashleigh Rolfson, Haley Lamb, Alex Fillio, Zoe Fillio and Dahlia Smith, and her two great-grandchildren, Makenzie Lamb and Milo Lamb. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Constance Marie (“Casie”) Fillio Smith.
Final arrangements are being handled by the family with a private interment ceremony to be held at St. Stephen the First Martyr in Sanford NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA.
