Annie MacKay Obituary

Annie Kerr MacKay, age 97, of Sanford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2025 with family by her side.

She was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada to the late Allan Brydson and Agnes “Nancy” Brydson, Scottish immigrants.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, Dr. Alvin Rae MacKay.  Annie worked in banking and Sutherlands Insurance during her late teens after graduating from GCVI and met the love of her life at a dance in Guelph, Ontario.  Annie was a devoted partner to her husband, Dr. Alvin MacKay, a respected veterinarian and shy gentleman from New Brunswick, Canada. They moved to the Chesapeake Bay area in 1950’s. Together, they established Chestertown Animal Hospital in Chestertown, Maryland, where she played a vital role in supporting and growing the practice for 20 years. Outside of her contributions to the veterinary clinic, Annie had a number of personal passions. She was an avid doll collector and took great joy in entertaining friends and family in her home. Yearly New Years Eve parties were enjoyed with friends where Annie would put on a spectacular spread and all danced the night away. After selling the Veterinary Hospital in Chestertown, and moving to Sanford, N.C., Annie started a new life, with new friends, but always made an effort to keep her old friendships active. A skilled bridge player, she enjoyed many afternoons at the card table, sharing laughter and camaraderie with those she loved. Following retirement, Annie and her husband embraced a love of travel and camping, exploring the beauty of the country together and creating countless cherished memories. Annie and Alvin participated in weekly line dancing, square dancing and round dancing.  On her own, Annie learned belly dancing for a short period of time, too!  She loved shopping sales, attending estate auctions and thrifting for treasures. She especially enjoyed her time with her granddaughters, Amy and Jennifer. Annie was a devoted member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and remained active in the congregation for as long as her health allowed.

A special thank you to Annie’s compassionate care givers - Charity, Dolly and Sharon, who Miss Annie enjoyed and loved. She was most grateful for her daughter, Linda, who ensured she received the best care possible during the past few difficult years with the help of her husband, David, who Annie was very fond of.

She is survived by her daughter Linda Joiner and husband David of Worton, Md.; daughter Lorna Ronald of Guelph, Ontario; Francis Ronald of Guelph, Ontario; grandchildren Amy Joiner Fermin and husband Jose Fermin of Cary, N.C.; Jennifer Craven and husband Michael of Raleigh, N.C.; David Joiner of Galena, MD.; Christopher Ronald and wife Alli of Holly Springs, N.C.; great-grandchildren Kayla Fermin, Eli Craven, Blayke Craven and Madeline Ronald.  She will also be missed by her companion Benson – her Siamese cat.  Annie loved her animal companions.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 14, 2025 from 10:00 AM until 10:50 AM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.  The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the chapel with Rev. Judy Drye officiating.  Burial will follow in Buffalo Cemetery.
