Alta Edna Butner Warwick, age 94, of Sanford, NC, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023, at Westfield Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Forsyth County, NC on January 28, 1929, to the late John Carl Butner and Helen Irene Watkins Butner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Thurman Warwick; twin brother Alton Butner and other brothers James and Harry Butner.
Alta graduated from the old Richmond High School in May 1948 as Salutatorian. She later attended Sanford Business College. Alta worked at Saco-Lowell and St. Charles Manufacturing for 19 years each. She was also employed at Spanco Yarns and for a short time at Staton Law office. Her last job prior to retirement was at Central Carolina Community College. She enjoyed work and being with people.
Church was very important to Alta. She joined Bethania Moravian Church at age 14 and in 1952, after marriage, joined Barbecue Presbyterian Church. She loved her church and its purpose. She served two years as Vice President of Fayetteville Presbyterial District Chairman of 12 churches, a Coastal Carolina Committee; first female Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at Barbecue Church. She also faithfully served as Elder, teacher, women of the church and various other committees. She was elected Elder Emeritus in January, 2010. Alta was a 60+ year member of the Eastern Star serving 46 of those years as secretary. She held state offices as Grand Martha and District Deputy Grand Matron.
She is survived by nephews Jimmy Butner (Diane), Marvin Butner (Teresa) and Randy Butner (Melissa); one great-niece Tammy Vaughn; one great-great-niece Kimberly Elmore and many friends that loved her dearly.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Barbecue Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bucky Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
