Alice Marie (Eatmon) Atkins

Alice Marie Eatmon Atkins, fondly known as Marie, age 91, of Sanford, NC, peacefully passed surrounded by her loved ones on June 20, 2019, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease

Marie was born on August 11, 1927 in Nash County, NC and grew up in the Sugarneck area of Broadway, NC to Bessie Bland and Herman Eatmon.  Marie was a member of the Sanford Church of God.  She was a homemaker and her hobbies were crocheting, cross-stitching and needlepoint. She also had a very impressive collection of hummingbird figurines.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; daughter Patricia Atkins Jones of Moncure, NC; brothers Raymond Eatmon of Kansas City, Missouri, Herman Jr. of Gaithersburg, MD, Tommy Eatmon of Sanford and sister Mildred Moore Stone of Sanford.

Marie is survived by her beloved husband of 73 years Lewis Neil Atkins.  She leaves behind a daughter Gloria Atkins Nelson and husband David of Sanford; a son Robert Lewis Atkins and wife Tammy of Sanford; and daughter Judith Atkins Wilson and husband David of Smithfield.

She is also survived by grandchildren: Neil Jones, Michael Nelson, Wendy Ellis, Christopher Nelson all of Sanford; Brian Jones of Fuquay-Varina, Lauryn Atkins of Wilmington, NC and Leanne Wilson of Smithfield, NC.

She is survived also by eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Her children would like to acknowledge their mother’s caregiver, Shameka Dowdy, whose dedication, professionalism, abiding kindness and love shown to their precious mother will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be held at the Sanford Church of God on Sunday, June 23rd from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM.  Celebration of her life will follow at 4:00 PM.  Burial will follow at White Hill Presbyterian Church cemetery.
