Sadie Patterson Byrd, age 87 of Sanford, NC, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at her home.
She was born in Harnett County to the late James Adam Patterson and Virginia Bell Patterson. She grew up in Harnett County where she attended Boone Trail High School and graduated in 1949. She then enrolled at East Carolina Teachers College, where she graduated in 1953 with a B.S. Degree in Physical Education. She taught in the Harnett County School System as a Physical Education Teacher.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her life was centered around her church, family and grandchildren. Sadie was a member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church in Sanford, NC. There she served in several different positions. She was honored with a plaque for her 45 years of service in the Adult Choir.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Eddie Lynn Byrd, her parents James Adam Patterson and Virginia Carolyn Bell Patterson; sisters Emma Byrd, Ann Collins; and brother John B. Patterson.
Surviving is her husband, of 63 years, William “Ed” Edgerton Byrd; daughter Cindy Howard and husband Franz of Whispering Pines, NC; son Jeff Byrd and wife Tammy of Broadway; grandchildren Brinson Byrd and wife Kaitlyn of Raleigh, Amelia Byrd of Raleigh, Dillon Byrd of Raleigh, Caitlin Howard of Greensboro, NC, Adam Howard of Fairbanks, Alaska and a step-granddaughter Anna Moore; sisters Carolyn Haire and Marie Hinesly of Spring Lake, NC; brother Larry Patterson and wife Shirley of Lillington and several nieces and nephews. She has an extended family that she treated and considered like real family; Quy Vo, Kim Vo and Cindy Vo all of Sanford; Erica Vo of Raleigh, Ann Lee and husband Brandon and son Jayden and daughter Aubrey Lee of Sanford.
The family will receive friends Sunday, June 3, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM in the McDowell Fellowship Hall of Jonesboro Height Baptist Church and at other times at the family home. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM in the sanctuary with Dr. Calvin Sayles officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in Mamers.
