Roy Nelson Johnson, age 78, of Sanford, NC, died Thursday, April 26, 2018 at UNC Hospitals.
He was born in Wake County, NC, on June 29, 1939 to the late Lemuel Gordon Johnson and Nova Bridges Johnson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Lenora Johnson Bright. Roy grew up in the Deep River Community. He was a member of the Deep River High School graduating class of 1957 and starred on the championship basketball team. He was a former volunteer with the Deep River Volunteer Fire Department and joined the Sanford National Guard Unit in 1962. He was a life-long member of Flat Springs Baptist Church where he served as usher, committeeman and deacon. Roy was employed by Dossenbach’s Finer Furniture for 41 years and retired as the warehouse manager. He volunteered at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home at its inception then began working part-time. Roy began working full-time when Dossenbach’s Furniture was sold. His connection with Bridges-Cameron spanned 39 years. Roy volunteered for Highway to Healing and was the epitome of a Southern Gentleman.
He is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Virginia “Ginger” Pearce Johnson; brother Herbert G. Johnson of Raleigh and sisters Athelene J. Walker and husband Jesse of Sanford, Margaret J. Pickard of Deep River; brother-in-law David Pearce and wife Elaine of Shawn, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Flat Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. Burial of cremains will follow at a later date in the church cemetery.
