Robert Ladson Leathers, age 72, of Sanford, NC, died Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Central Carolina Hospital.
He was born in Durham County, NC on May 10, 1945 to the late Robert Lee Leathers and Ruth Marie Monroe Leathers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Robert Brian Leathers and siblings Lillian Leathers, Ruth Ann L. Holeman and John Edwin Leathers. Robert loved his Lord, his family, his country, and running. He loved his church – Grace Chapel – where he taught classes. He attended Durham Technical College and graduated with honors with an A.A.S., Shaw University with a B.A. and Webster University with honors with an M.A. in Criminal Justice. Robert worked with the Durham Police Department, Central Carolina Community College as Chairman of the Criminal Justice program for 14 years, and the NC Justice Academy as an instructor/coordinator for 22 years where he was honored with an award named for him- the Robert Leathers Merit Service Award. He also worked for the Institute of Police Technology and Management as an instructor in Jacksonville, FL.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Harriet Blue Leathers; daughters Robbi Ellen Leathers Muckenfuss and husband J. of Durham, Jennifer Marie Leathers Myers and husband Charles of Charlotte; siblings Peggie L. Wright of Durham, Francis L. Thomson of Boise, ID, and Tim Leathers of Durham; and grandchildren John Alexander Muckenfuss, Kathryn Blue Muckenfuss, Anna Noel Muckenfuss and Robert Stephen Leathers.
The family will receive friends Friday, February 9, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the narthex of Grace Chapel Church. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM with Rev. Joel Murr and Dr. Royce Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
