Mildred Audrey (Matthews) Smith

Mildred Audrey Matthews Smith, age 92, of Sanford, NC, died Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Central Carolina Hospital.

She was born in Lee County, NC on May 16, 1926 to the late Walker Monroe Matthews Sr. and Mattie Fox Matthews.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert Howard Smith; son Larry Howard; and siblings Marion Matthews Fox, Monroe Matthews Jr., Betty Sue Matthews Buchanan and Joseph David Matthews.  Mrs. Smith was a member of East Sanford Baptist Church and also attended Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church.  She worked for Sanford Finishing Company and was an excellent cook and seamstress.

She is survived by a son Barry Gilbert Smith and wife Brenda of Sanford; grandchildren Matthew Cameron Smith and wife Dawn, Barra Smith Ray and husband James, Alexis Faye Boyer and great-grandchildren Dillon Smith, Madison Smith, Macie Smith and Drew Smith, Christian Ray, Blake Ray, Carson Smith and Mason Ray.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Shallow Well Church cemetery with Rev. Robbie Gibson officiating.  There will be no formal visitation.
