Jewel (Howard) Womack

March 9, 1920 ~ February 18, 2018 (age 97)

Jewel Howard Womack, 97, of Sanford, North Carolina, passed away on February 18, 2018 in Orlando, Florida. Jewel was born in Corinth, North Carolina on March 9, 1920 to the late Mr. Connie Maise Howard and Mrs. Mattie Maddox Howard. She is predeceased by her husband, Elmer C. Womack and her three brothers; J. Lester Howard, Walter B. Howard, and Clayton A. Howard.

Jewel graduated from Broadway High School, Class of 1938, where she loved playing on the girls' basketball team. Jewel married her childhood sweetheart, Elmer C. Womack, in 1940. She was very active with The Lee County, The North Carolina State, and The National Senior Olympics, having won countless gold medals in activities such as horse shoes, shuffleboard, croquet, bowling, billiards, etc. She was even a Silver Medal recipient in the National Senior Olympics horseshoe competition in 2006. In addition, she loved to play cards with her friends, and was a member of several card parties. She volunteered with Meals-On-Wheels well into her 90's. She loved to garden, and took much pride in her home grown vegetables and had a knack for canning and making various pickle recipes. She loved cooking for family and friends, and nothing could compare to her made-from-scratch chocolate pie. Jewel was an active and involved grandmother, always attending plays, dance recitals, sporting events, and special occasions. It was highly important for Jewel to help anyone in need, including her elderly family and friends; she was extremely generous with her time and love.

Jewel is survived by her four children: Jean W. Gile (Charlie), Brenda W. Knight (Ron), Judith W. Gray (George), and E.C. "Butch" Womack Jr. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren: Kim Laughman, Craig Gile, Todd Merritts, Trent Merritts, Tiffany Lasseigne, Jake King, and Dex King. In addition, she is survived by 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A Visitation will take place on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Sanford, North Carolina. The Service will be officiated by the Reverend Gary Moore, with music provide by David Almond. It will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Moore Union Christian Church, 4294 Buckhorn Road, Sanford, North Carolina. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
