Dorothy (Dot) Eugenia Phelps, 90, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at her home after a brief illness.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Chapel Church in Sanford on Wednesday, April 4 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service.
Dorothy was born on December 24, 1927 in Warren, Ohio to her parents George and Mary Senard. She graduated from the Villa Maria Girls High School in Villa Maria, PA. She married her husband, Rev. Richard Eugene Phelps, on November 18, 1946 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. They recently celebrated their 71st anniversary.
Dorothy was a pastor’s wife for more than 40 years, serving Nazarene Churches in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Florida, Mississippi, and North Carolina. She held many church offices over the years including Missionary President. In her younger years, she worked as an elevator operator in Griswald Department store in Warren. She was a very outgoing person who never met a stranger and loved to make people laugh. Her hobbies included crocheting and counted cross stitch and she would often give one of her creations to someone to surprise them.
In addition to her husband, Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Terri Rush (Tony) with whom she made her home, daughter, Marilyn May, grandchildren: Rebecca Sadler (Ray), Christopher Thellman, Patrick Thellman (Mary), Tim Crowe (Kylie), Amy Powers (Randy), Jonathan Lance (Alena), Rachel Gabriel (Daniel), Elizabeth Moore (Maurice), Rick Watson (Laurie), nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
She was a member of Penny Road Nazarene Church in Cary but attended Grace Chapel Church in Sanford. Dot was preceded in death by her parents, brother, George (Buddy) Senard, and her daughter, Laura Jean Brown.
Family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Bible Society. Final internment will be in Braceville, Ohio.
