Betty Jo Wofford Womble, age 85, died Friday, February 23, 2018 at Central Carolina Hospital.
She was born in Sanford, NC on July 3, 1932 to Elizabeth Harrington Wofford and Tom Wofford. She is survived by daughter Rhonda Womble of Floyd, VA; granddaughter, Whitney Chigas and great-granddaughter Lilly Chigas of Emerald Isle, NC. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband William Clyde Womble; brother Eugene Wofford and sisters Thelma Wicker and Anne Daurity. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She cherished all the friendships she made and her favorite things to do was visiting the sick, homebound, praying for others, cooking and enjoying her family and friends.
Betty was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder and Deacon. She enjoyed being a member of the Dietrick Sunday School Class. She served as a Stephen Minister since 1991 and a Stephen Leader since 2006. She always received a blessing to serve and share God’s love to others. Betty received Honorary Life Membership from the women of First Presbyterian Church of Sanford. She was presented the Governor’s Award for work with underprivileged children by Governor Martin in 1987. Betty served on the THANKS program (Thoughtful, Helpful, Adults, and Kids Sharing). She taught children that “God loves you, and so do I”.
She served as a Girl Scout Leader for six years and still had special bonds with the girls she taught. Betty was also a courtesy member of the Sanford Woman’s Club.
The family will receive friends Sunday, February 25, 2018 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at First Presbyterian Church Monday, February 26th at 11:00 AM with Rev. Bruce Benton Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.
