William Clyde Womble, age 90, of Sanford, NC, died Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Central Carolina Hospital.
Clyde was born in Siler City on April 27, 1927 to Mema Thomas Womble and Whitney Gordon Womble. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Clarence Womble, Jimmy Womble and sisters Christine Herndon, Mary Alice Wilkie, Maggie Cole and Viola Westmoreland.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Wofford Womble; daughter Rhonda Womble of Floyd, VA; Granddaughter, Whitney Chigas and great-granddaughter Lilly Chigas of Emerald Isle, NC.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder and Deacon. He enjoyed being a member of the Dietrick Sunday School Class.
Clyde served in the Merchant Marines, from 1944-1946-World War II, also served in the Army during the Korean Conflict from 1954 to 1956. He joined the Sanford Lions Club on September 28, 1950 and was awarded Life Membership on April 5, 2010 from the Sanford Lions Club and the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from Lions Club International Foundation. He enjoyed helping others through his Lions Club service.
Clyde was owner of Womble Chevrolet Company for 38 years, where he greatly appreciated all the employees, their families and customers. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and cherished all the friendships he had made.
The family will receive friends Friday, February 16, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and at other times at the family home. Funeral service will be Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bruce Benton Jr., Rev. Betty Sherrod and Rev. Wendell McGee officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery. Members of the Sanford Lions Club are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.
