Verdie Alene Strickland Thornton, 93, died on October 5th. Her life began in Sampson County on December 17, 1921, born to mother, Martha Ann Best Strickland and father, Moses Allen Strickland. She joined her sisters, Zannie Ann and Mary Catherine; her brothers, Perry Winfield and Edward F.  And soon, her brother Allen D. and sister Edna Leigh completed the family.

In 1940, Verdie married Robert Allen (Jack) Thornton. They had daughters, Sheila and Hope, and had been married 74 years when Jack died December, 2014.

She is survived by her daughters Sheila Ann Smith and husband Charles of Sanford and Hope Koonce and husband Mack of Chapel Hill,  sister Mary Stanton of South Lyme, CT. and many nieces and nephews.

Verdalene was dedicated to her family,  working to ensure her dearly loved daughters had lives of opportunity.  Nieces and nephews considered her a ‘second mama’ and family members knew she was always there for them. Cooking and sharing fine southern food became an expression of her love.

She was committed to her God and treasured her bible. May the promise of Peace and Joy be hers.

Verdie was a private woman and in honoring her wishes, the family encourages everyone who knew her to celebrate her life in whatever ways they wish.  There will be no visitation or services.
