Robert Gray Smithwick, 85, of Sanford died Thursday, June 23, 2016 at his son’s home.

Mr. Smithwick was born in Beaufort County, on March 5, 1931, to the late Hyiett and Katie Rowe Smithwick.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Geraldine Laprad Smithwick and a son, Robert Gray Smithwick, Jr. and daughters, Rose Lane and Margaret Smithwick.  He worked as a meat cutter for Civil Service and was retired from the US Army 1st SGT Green Beret.

Surviving relatives include his sons, Douglas Smithwick of Cameron, Anthony Smithwick of Swansboro and Howard Smithwick of Olivia; a brother, Kenneth Smithwick of AZ; a sister Bonnie Peele of Washington, NC; six grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends Sat., June 25, 2016, from 6-8PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.  A graveside service will be held Sun., June 26th, 3PM at Lee Memory Gardens with full military rites.
