Mr. James Richard Smith, 70, of Sanford, N.C., died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Smith was born in Lee County, Virginia, to the late Joseph Claymon Smith and Pearl Crawford Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charlie, Ed, and J.C. Smith and by four sisters, Goldie Lyons, Bernice Fatony, Nora Crusenberry and Jeanie Archambeau. He worked in the coal and hard rock mines in West Virginia and also worked at J.T. Devenport for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Wicker Gunter Smith; three sons, James Richard Smith, Jr. of California, Joseph C. Smith of Michigan, and Jason Smith of Michigan; three step-children, Anita Gunter of Cameron, N.C., Raymond Gunter of Sanford, and Mary Rourk of Asheboro, N.C.; a brother, Narvil L. Smith of Lillington, N.C.; two sisters, Sylvia Couch of Oceana, West Virginia and Eva Mullens of Brenton, West Virginia and also by numerous grandchildren.
The family will receive friends, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral will follow Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel .
