Mr. D. W. “Duck” Winstead, Jr., age 83, of Sanford, N.C., died Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at Central Carolina Hospital.
Mr. Winstead was born in Lee County, N.C. on Nov. 9, 1928, to the late Dorsey Waylon Winstead and Sue Bennie Cooper Winstead. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Sherman and brothers, Pell, Harold, Gorman, and Evander Winstead.
He graduated and played basketball at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia. He also attended and played basketball for Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. After college he worked for Pillsbury Corporation for ten years. He also worked for Royster Corporation and managed Lee County Farm Service for thirty years. He was a member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Brown Winstead; sons, Mark Winstead and wife Vicki of Cary, N.C. and Michael Winstead and wife Linda of Prescott, Arizona; brother, Cooper Winstead, of Sanford, N.C.; sister, Virginia Dare and husband Douglas Johnson of Sanford, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Donna Poe of Sanford, N.C.; grandchildren, Christopher Winstead, Jessica Winstead, and Michelle Dudley; great grandchildren, Tylor Winstead, Tanner Winstead, Brittany Dudley, Trevor Dudley and Boris the grand dog.
The family will receive friends Sunday, June 17, 2012, from 6:00 to 7:30 at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Monday, June 18, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Mark Gaskins and Rev. Thomas K. Spence, Jr. officiating.
